Medical management of fibroids

Ideal treatment for fibroids should meet three end points for the lady suffering with fibroids. It should bring about relief to her symptoms and signs. It should cause reduction in the size of fibroids. It should help her preserve the fertility if desired. Removal of the uterus (Hysterectomy) is the definitive treatment for older women with symptoms. Removal of the fibroids (myoma) is called myomectomy which is the surgical treatment for women who want to retain the uterus for reproductive function next time. Treatment of fibroids with medicines is mainly for relief of symptoms for women waiting or delaying definitive management. Medical management can be used for buying time for correction of low hemoglobin levels (anemia) prior to surgery, to reduce the size of a large fibroid and for some women in the perimenopausal age group in whom the myoma may shrink and she gets into menopause and in some women desirous of retaining the uterus.
