One of the most feared complication of fibroid by the patient it that the fibroid can become cancerous. Such an event that fibroid becomes cancerous is very rare occurring in less than 1% of patients with fibroids. Any patient who has a fibroid and a sudden increase in the size of the fibroid and has unrelated symptoms of shortness of breath, abdominal discomfort needs further checkup and investigations. CT scan and MRI scan are useful investigations and when atypical or abnormal findings are suspected surgery is recommended. Women who are approaching menopause (perimenopausal) and post-menopausal women who have large fibroids require to monitored for increased symptoms and if there is a suspicious then hysterectomy is advised.
